RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
- Besides the general application of this centre for the benefit of the P.G & Research Scholars,
in browsing the net to get update information on the subject of their interest in Biology & to infuse
a sense of interest on the use and importance of Bioinformatics and utilization of Bioinformatics
softwares, the BIF centre of Presidency College has chosen a globally important and relevant
area of Application of Bioinformatics namely “Drug discovery & development”.
- As, the drug discovery & development needs an inter and multidisciplinary approach,
the Present Bioinformatics Centre will try to bring together the activities highly reputed and
relevant departments to Drug discovery & development of this institution namely the department of Microbiology
& Biotechnology, Chemistry, Plant Biology, Biotechnology, Zoology & Statistics.
- Dissemination of knowledge on Bioinformatics to teachers as well as P.G Students.
- To develop a database on Drug discovery & Drug developments from Plants sources,
Animal sources & Mineral sources over the 11th plan which are the thrust areas, unattended
so for in Bioinformatics.
- To conduct programme for higher secondary school students & teachers on Bioinformatics,
to focus the importance of Bioinformatics in Drug discovery & Drug development. This will
popularize Bioinformatics and create an effective impression in the young minds,
who are in the cross roads of choosing their professional career, to venture into Bioinformatics and
also appreciate its role in Drug discovery & Drug development.
- To meet the increase in the nomber of connectivity and infrastructure to cope up with new departments to be created/offered
- As the Government of Tamil Nadu has decided to elevate this prestigious institution into a full
fledged university the Bioinformatics centre needs to be strengthened to meet the connectivity to
increase the number of Departments to be connected from 24 to 34
- To establish interconnectivity and exchange of information with other centres working on Drug
discovery & development under BTIS net of DBT.
- To work for the introduction of P.G & P.G Diploma programmes in Bioinformatics.
