VARIOLATION
  • Widely practiced before the era of vaccination as prophylaxis against severity of smallpox


  • Introduced in the 18th century, it spread through the Balkans into central Europe and from Turkey to Great Britain and subsequently to other countries of Europe.


  • Practice of deliberate inoculation of an uninfected person with the smallpox virus


  • Material was taken from dried scabs or pustules and used deliberately to infect healthy recipients
